Summer Schedule Begins in One Week

Summer term begins June 4. Students have wound down from the Spring semester and are working to complete their summer registrations or their Fall admission packets.

I just returned from a Road Tour with the MSU Alumni Association and the Bulldog Club. It was a lot of fun meeting with alumni from around the state and some potential distance MBA students.

My focus this week has been to catch up on emails and questions and begin preparing for the Fall Semester. It will be here before we know it.

Next weekend I am going to the Mississippi in the Park Picnic held in New York's Central Park. I hope to meet with additional MSU Alumni there but also meet some potential distance MBA students who have not previously attended MSU. Classes are almost full for the summer and fall is moving in that direction. It's going to be a great year!

Summertime, summertime, summertime

I am ashamed that my last post was in February. We have been working on the website almost daily for the past couple of weeks and the blog got overlooked!

Spring graduation was held last week on campus. Students who were waiting on spring final grades are registering for classes for summer and fall. Summer classes start in just about 3 weeks or so (June 4).

This week I have been on the road with the Mississippi State University Alumni Association "Road Dawgs Tour." I have visited Meridian, Tupelo, and Southaven (MS) and next week I rejoin the tour for Ocean Springs and Jackson. It has been a lot of fun visiting with alumni and remembering the good ole days on campus.

Many of the alumni I have spoken with fondly remember their times on campus and leaving campus to start a new job. It's a different conversation than the one I have with many of the students participating in the distance program. Many of you have graduated from a physical campus - either MSU or somewhere else - and have been working for a couple of years (or more). Now you are ready for your MBA.

That is what the distance MBA is here for...to assist you, the student, who cannot come back to campus to finish their graduate degree. That is what I am here for...to help you with that process. Let me know what I can do for you.

Where has the time gone?

I cannot believe it has been almost a month since I last posted. We have been working hard to get ready for the second term of spring as well as prepare a course listing for summer and fall. The new course lists for summer and fall should be up in the next three weeks.

Second term classes begin Thursday. Some spaces are still available.

Admission applications are still being accepted for summer. We already have a number of applications received.

Hope everyone's spring semester is going well.

Spring is in the air

It is a beautiful 60 degrees on campus here today. The sun is shining and my southern bones are adjusting to the typical warmth after a few days of below freezing weather. I wish our distance students farther north could fully appreciate this beautiful weather but I have a feeling that many of us here would enjoy a couple of inches of snow, if we had the choice.

As we dive into the month of February we begin focusing on the second term of the spring semester and applications for the summer. We recently updated the admission page on the website (available at www.distance.msstate.edu/mba/admissions.html) and I noticed that there are 53 days until the summer application deadline. Time flies.

Did you know that by admitting for the summer and taking six hours during the Summer and Fall semesters you could complete 40 percent of the program before Christmas?

MSU Summer Exchange - Germany

Dear Students:

The College of Business and Industry has arranged a summer exchange
program with the German University of Duisburg.

While studying in Germany, students can take classes in English and
earn 6 credits at Mississippi State concurrently. If fluency in
German exists, paid internships at internationally known German
companies can be arranged.

There will be an information meeting on March 26th @ 12:00-13:00 in
McCool # 243. The application deadline is April 10th. Scholarships
for partial funding are available on a competitive basis.

Below follows a more detailed description of the program:
The Business and Economics Summer Term (BEST) is an academic program
in an international setting, which is designed for upper division
undergraduate and graduate students. It is organized by the Faculty
of Business Administration - Mercator School of Management (MSM) -
of Duisburg-Essen University in cooperation with the Rhine-
Westphalia Institute for Economic Research (RWI) in Essen, Germany.
offers a variety of courses in business, economics and German
language with special emphasis on the European economic environment.
In addition, internships with companies and institutions in the
vicinity can be arranged after the course program, which runs from

June 04 - July 06, 2007

The five-week course program, customized for our partner
institutions around the world, also includes field trips and company
visits to the industrial and cultural vicinity of Duisburg and a
sightseeing excursion to Berlin. Located in the north-west of
Germany on the banks of the river Rhine, Duisburg is not only a
challenging place to study, but also an excellent starting point for
touring Germany, or for traveling to Amsterdam, Brussels, London,
Paris or Prague on weekends or before and after the program.

Summer Admission Reminders

Yes! We do accept applications for admission for the summer. Remember our program is fully online and students may begin in the spring, summer, or fall.

It is time to begin submitting admission applications for summer. The deadline is April 1. Applications are available online at www.distance.msstate.edu/mba/forms.html. Just a few reminders about applications:

1. Plan for having your transcripts sent to our offices. It may take as many as 3-4 weeks for a transcript to arrive at our office from another institution. Be sure and allow enough time for this. Even if you are not sure whether you want to admit for the summer or fall, I encourage you to go ahead and request your transcripts be sent. That way if you decide to wait for fall you are one step ahead.

2. Visit www.mba.com/mba/TaketheGMAT for more information about the GMAT and scheduling to take the GMAT. It takes approximately 3 weeks for GMAT to get official scores to our offices. Have you already taken the GMAT and didn't select MSU to receive the score? Not a problem. Simply do so now. If it has been longer than 5 years since you took the exam GMAT may not send us a score.

Ring out the Old Year

Christmas and New Year's are just around the corner. It's time to prepare for the Spring semester. During the last few days we have been working to help students get registered for Spring. Classes start early this upcoming year - January 8. If you are a current student make sure that you have registered or been registered.

Our offices will be closed for two weeks during the holiday period. Please feel free to send emails during that time to tswann@aoce.msstate.edu . They will be responded to after the first of the year.

Hello all. I want to take this opportunity to welcome you to the MSU Distance MBA website and let you know that most of the answers you are seeking regarding our program are found here within the pages of this website but if you have additional questions please feel free to contact me any time! My name is Tamra Swann and I serve as the coordinator for the Distance MBA program. I have been with the program for a couple of semesters now and truly enjoy working with it. My office works to provide you with assistance during admissions, registration, assistance with technology, and many other areas. I'll give more information in future posts!
